Pitango

It is always a great day when I get a chance to visit Pitango, and have a gelato. 

It's an even better day when they have Mojito gelato.

 This is my guilty pleasure, I bet I could eat ten of these in one sitting.  Delicious.  The tartness of the lime, the yummy mint.  I can't think of a better dessert. 

My pal Rachel and I got some gelato today and then met up with our friends to get some dinner in Fells Point.  Had an amazing day, hoping that tomorrow follows suit.

Fells Point

I made my way to Fells Point today, and I had absolutely no intention of taking pictures.  I did not bring Bert, my big camera...thankfully I always have my point and shoot camera in my purse.

I have not been to Fells Point, or simply down town baltimore in a while, so I had no idea that there was heavy construction occurring in Fell Point.

I could not believe that these buildings were all gutted, and only the front facades were still standing.

I was also heartbreaking to see the damage that had been done to this supermarket in the middle of the square, thankfully it looks like renovations may be beginning.

I loved the way the light shown through the supports.

And the cool blue sky against the warm red bricks.

I will definitely go back on an overcast day, it was far too bright today.

Hahahah, I love the juxtaposition of the open Hungry Andy's restaurant next to an empty facade.

When I go to fells, usually I get a cup of gelato and sit on the pier.  I love to sit by the water.

I was quite surprised at the vast amount of bird flapping around.  This was a very lucky shot where the birds took flight just as I depressed the shutter.

A family with a young child had brought bread crumbs, which brought all the birds to the pier.  But then the child was running around, as children do, and the birds would startle and fly off.

All in all it was a great day.  Had great italian food in little italy, wandered about in Fells Point, and watched Les Miserables.   A very nice beginning to 2013.

Fells Point, February 27th, 2012

So today felt like spring!!!!!  I wore a light skirt and a short sleeved shirt.  I just hope that this weather keeps up.  My father went with me to take pictures, and we walked all over fells point.

Fell point again.  I do love fells point, but I would be lying if I said that I keep going back there for any other reason then I know the parking situation really well  :  )   Parking anywhere down town near the water can be difficult and quite expensive.  Typically I can find a free parking space easily...and it's pretty.

The birds were out in full force.  Of course I was cursing them ten minutes into my trip as I tried to take blurry pictures of them flying around, but I have to admitt, for pidgins they were pretty fun to photograph.

I love these corner buildings, which taper into like five feet.  I lightened the picture with hard light, and then used the screen tool to lighten a few spaces, and I like the depth it created.  

I love this doc, I don't love the pictures I took today, but I love the doc.  I am going to have to go back and take some more pictures, probably on a cloudy day.  I edited this picture a little bit, but it still is over exposed...I really need to capture the character of this dock.

The Natty Boh tree.  National Bohemian is a beer that was originally brewed right here in Baltimore, MD.  it's kind of infamous in Maryland.  The tree on the left has cut up Natty Boh cans hang through out, like a Christmas tree.  It really reminded me of the movie twister, where they cut up all the aluminum cans and add them to the tornado detector devices.  I guess I just love the dark bark against a vivid blue sky.

I love the hard light tool when it's used on rust.

Ok, so here are some of the pictures that I took today...that I don't hate  :  )  Hopefully tomorrow I will have a more successful, blurry day.

Blur, Blur, Blur: Photo Project week 2, day 4

Well, blur, blur, blur is a bust, bust, bust.  I am actually contemplating making this a two-week project.

This is just a taste of the completely over exposed blurry pictures I have been taking.  I am going to read a little more from my photography books and check out the internet....and hopefully I can get some better pics tomorrow.  If not, then I am going to give blur, blur, blur another try.

I am going to do another post of pictures that I've taken today at Fells point, I have been taking pictures I just haven't been taking the best blurry pics.

Hello All,

This is my first post on blogger and for the last five years I have been working on my photography.

My first camera would have been a yellow, point and shoot, one time use film camera.  My senior year of college my father bought me a Nikon D-80 camera when he saw the photos I was producing for photography class.  Then within the last three years my father took my D-80 and replaced it will a D-300. Since the switch I have had some trouble acclimating to a camera with absolutely no presets ( the D-300 does have the capability of having presets, if you create them.)

I started this blog so that I can challange myself to work on photography skills.  I tend to take thousands of pictures on my two week vacations each years, but I take only a few hundred pictures for the rest of the year.  Yesterday I bought Lee Frost's, 50-Photo projects book and I hope that I can complete one of these 50 projects per week and finish before the year is up, depending on whether I stick to the program.  Hopefully the challenge will light a fire beneith me, and I will get better at taking pictures with Big Bertha (the d-300.)

This week I will Focus on the first challenge, ARCHITECTURE!!!!  Qlthough it was raining today, I did take a few pictures.  Each week I will have one week, beginning on Friday to complete the weeks assignment.

These pictures were taken in Fell Point, MD.  It was pooring, so no matter how often I cleaned the droplets off the lens, there was always distortions.  In the end, I fell in love with the distoritions in these pictures.  I used Photoshop Elements to edit these pictures, and I used Pioneer woman's free action, Colorized to finish these pics.

I'm not sure if anyone but myself is going to see this blog, but if anyone else does, I am sure that you will be curious about the name.  I chose the name Pompeii Penguin for two reasons.  Firstly, one of my favorite pictures that I have ever take, was in Pompeii, Italy.  I will do a post just for that picture, and other Italy pictures in the future.  I also remember a children's book that my mother read to me as a child, A Wish for Wings that work.  It was about a penguin that asked Santa to help him fly.   He was sure that Santa would make his wings fly, but in the end Santa showed him what amazing tricks his wings could do, and on Christmas day the little penguin flew with the help of his friends.  I have no idea as to what I am going to do with my life, but I am sure that with the help of my friends, family, and a stubborn Irish spirit, I know I'll be fine.  So this name means a lot to me.
